Understanding and Managing Dry Eye Disease

Dry eye disease occurs when your eyes don't produce enough tears or when the tears evaporate too quickly. This can lead to inflammation and damage to the eye's surface, causing discomfort and visual disturbances.

Causes: Dry eye can be caused by medical conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, hormonal changes, medications, and environmental factors. Dysfunction of the meibomian glands, which produce the oily layer of tears, is also a common cause.

Symptoms: These include a gritty sensation, stinging, burning, redness, and blurry vision. Severe cases can lead to complications like eye infections.

Management: Lifestyle changes can significantly alleviate dry eye symptoms. These include using a humidifier, ensuring adequate hydration, reducing screen time, wearing protective eyewear, and taking regular breaks during activities that strain the eyes.

For persistent symptoms, consult your optometrist. Treatments may include artificial tears, prescription medications, or procedures to improve tear quality and reduce inflammation.
